Hello, I’m “Taku” from Soya area in Hokkaido. Soya area is including Wakkanai city.
In May, there are days in Honshu of Japan when the temperature exceeds 20℃, and so it’s a good time to travel.
I’ve put together some information about the temperature and what to wear in Wakkanai in May, from the perspective of a local person, for people who are coming to visit as tourists.

Is it still cold in Wakkanai in May?

It’s cold! As you can see from the table below, the temperature is about the same as it is in February or March on Honshu (ex. Tokyo, Nagoya etc). If you’re coming from Honshu, we recommend that you come prepared for winter (bring a jacket).
Climate of Wakkanai in May
Ave Temp(℃) | Max Temp(℃) | min Temp(℃) | |
---|---|---|---|
Wakkanai | 8.8 | 12.0 | 6.0 |
Sapporo | 12.4 | 17.3 | 8.3 |
Tokyo | 18.2 | 22.9 | 14.0 |
Nagoya | 18.9 | 24.1 | 14.5 |
Osaka | 19.7 | 24.5 | 15.6 |
Fukuoka | 19.4 | 23.7 | 15.6 |

The temperature is about the same as in February and March… You say you’re dressed for winter, but it’s hot when I come from here.

I think that the clothes I wear when I go on business trips from the Soya region to Honshu might be of some help, so I’d like to introduce them to you.
About clothing

I’m wearing jeans on the bottom and a fleece & windbreaker or down jacket within a long T-shirt on the tops.

It’s hot in Honshu in that style… and the top gets in the way.

You can take your fleece or windbreaker (or down jacket) off and fold it up compactly and put it in your bag if you’re on Honshu. I think it’ll be cold just in a shirt… It might be a good idea to prepare a fleece or a thin sweater or two and decide whether to wear them or not depending on the temperature that day.

Sightseeing of Wakkanai in May

Where would you recommend I go?

As the snow has melted, I recommend going for a drive to see the various natural sights (such as Mizubashou and Ezonoryukinka). Wakkanai, which is the last place on the cherry blossom front, starts to see the Ezo cherry blossom bloom from mid-May, so you can enjoy the last cherry blossoms at Wakkanai Park.

Are there any events? How about Soya Cape?

I guess the event is still a little way off…
From May, regular sightseeing buses will be running around tourist spots such as Soya Cape and Nosappu Cape. If you can’t drive a rental car, I recommend that too.

It’s a bit cold, but we also recommend travelling from Soya Cape to Wakkanai Station by rental bicycle (there are also electric bicycles available). There are cycle stations at Wakkanai Station and Soya Cape, so it’s possible to travel one way only.
・If you go to Soya Cape, I recommend the scallop ramen at Mamiyado.
・If you go to Nosshapu Cape, I recommend the seafood rice bowl at Ryoushi-no-mise.
Conclusion
If you’re coming to Wakkanai in May, be prepared for the cold of February and March in Tokyo. Also, it’s very windy, so it’s a good idea to have something like a windbreaker to protect you from the wind.
