March in Wakkanai: Local Insights on Weather, Clothing, and Recommended Spots

この記事は約4分で読めます。

March Weather in Wakkanai

In March, Wakkanai remains quite cold, with average temperatures around -1.0°C, highs reaching 1.2°C, and lows dropping to -3.5°C. This is significantly colder than many regions in Honshu during the same period. Visitors from warmer areas should prepare for conditions colder than their typical winter.

Recommended Clothing

Given the chilly climate, it’s advisable to dress warmly. A combination of jeans, a T-shirt, a fleece layer, and a down jacket is recommended. While a down jacket might feel too warm in Honshu, it can be easily packed away when not needed. Footwear should be waterproof with good traction due to lingering snow and ice; hiking or trail running shoes are suitable. Accessories like gloves, hats, and neck warmers are also beneficial.

Tourist Attractions in March

While Wakkanai may not host many events in March, there are still attractions to enjoy:

Noshappu Cape: More accessible than Cape Soya, with frequent bus services. Nearby, the Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium and the Wakkanai Youth Science Museum offer engaging experiences.

Onsen (Hot Springs): To warm up, consider visiting local hot springs. “Yum Wakkanai Onsen Minato no Yu” is conveniently located near the station and was ranked third nationally in the scenic category of the 2024 Onsen General Election. “Wakkanai Onsen Dōmu (Eng),” near Noshappu Cape, offers stunning views of the Sea of Japan and Rishiri Fuji, especially at sunset.

Summary

When visiting Wakkanai in March, prepare for cold weather by dressing in warm, winter-appropriate clothing. Ensure your footwear is suitable for snowy and icy conditions. While the region may not have many events during this time, attractions like Noshappu Cape and local hot springs provide enjoyable experiences.
